How does the examination work?

  1. Check-in and identification

On arrival, we check your identity. For a revalidation or renewal, we review your most recent medical certificate.

  2. Medical history

You fill in and sign a health declaration. It covers your medical history and whether you have applied for a medical certificate before.

  3. Tests

Such as an ECG and eye, hearing and urine tests. Which tests you need depends on your age and on whether it is an initial examination or a revalidation/renewal.

  4. Physical examination

A certified AME (Aeromedical Examiner) examines you and assesses whether you meet the Class 3 requirements.

  5. Assessment and certificate

The certificate is only issued once all tests have been completed and you have been assessed as fit. If there are findings, the doctor may request further tests or refer your case to the licensing authority.

Who can examine you?

Under European rules, an initial Class 3 certificate is issued by an approved aeromedical centre (AeMC). For a revalidation or renewal, you can also go to a certified AME (Aeromedical Examiner).

Sky Medical Center carries out both the initial examination and the revalidation/renewal.

Frequently asked questions about the Class 3 medical

Who needs a Class 3 medical certificate?

Anyone who applies for or holds an air traffic controller licence or student licence must have a Class 3 certificate. The exception is someone who exercises the privileges of the licence only in a simulator.

How long is a Class 3 certificate valid?

24 months. From the age of 40, it is 12 months.

When can I revalidate my certificate?

Up to 45 days before the expiry date. The new validity period then starts on the expiry date of your current certificate.

My certificate has expired. What now?

Then you need a renewal. How extensive the examination is depends on how long ago your certificate expired: less than 2 years, more than 2 years or more than 5 years.

Can I have my initial examination with any AME?

No. An initial Class 3 certificate is issued by an approved aeromedical centre (AeMC). Revalidation and renewal can also be done by a certified AME (Aeromedical Examiner).

What if I do not meet a requirement?

If you do not fully meet a requirement, but it is unlikely to jeopardise safety, the doctor will refer your case to the licensing authority or the certificate may be issued with a limitation. This depends on the condition.
